Overview
Natchez Crape Myrtle is a vigorous white-flowering tree selected for long summer bloom, strong mildew resistance, and smooth exfoliating bark. Its cinnamon and cream trunks provide year-round ornamental value in Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
Trees commonly mature 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide, developing an upright vase-shaped crown.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a lawn specimen, a street-side accent with adequate setback, or a flowering shade tree for a large bed. The white flowers work well with both tropical and traditional architecture.
Sunlight
Full sun is required for dense branching, heavy flowering, and good disease resistance.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in well-drained soil and water deeply during establishment. Mature trees tolerate short droughts, but flowering improves with moisture during dry periods. Avoid buried root flares, volcano mulch, and chronically wet soil.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring provides the easiest establishment period in Tampa.
Pruning and Maintenance
Train young trees with several well-spaced trunks or one central leader. Remove crossing branches and basal suckers. Never top the canopy or perform severe annual cutting known as crape murder.
Wildlife Value
Flowers supply pollen for bees and other insects.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Natchez handles Tampa heat and ordinary winter cold well. Newly planted trees remain vulnerable to drought, and hurricanes can split poorly structured multi-trunk specimens that were not trained early.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major toxicity or thorn concern is widely reported.
Invasive Concerns
Natchez Crape Myrtle is not native to Florida and is not generally listed as invasive. Remove unwanted seedlings and root suckers, and keep the cultivar out of natural areas.
