Overview
Native blue porterweed is a low, spreading Florida perennial with small blue flowers opening along slender spikes. It blooms through much of the warm season and draws steady butterfly activity.
Mature Size and Growth
The true native form usually stays lower and spreads wider than many nonnative porterweeds, often reaching about 1 to 3 feet tall and several feet wide. Habit varies with light and growing conditions.
Where to Use It
Use it in pollinator gardens, sunny native beds, coastal plantings, and informal borders. Place it near patios or windows where the frequent butterfly visits are easy to see.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil. It accepts sand and moderate drought after establishment. Regular water produces fuller growth, but saturated soil weakens the plant.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from spring through early fall. Trim long or damaged stems during active growth and cut back freeze-damaged material after cold risk passes. Allow room for its spreading habit.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
The small flowers supply nectar to butterflies and other pollinators. Its extended blooming period makes it a valuable companion for native host plants.
Important Considerations
Verify the scientific name. Tall nonnative porterweed and nursery hybrids are often sold under similar common names and might cross with native plants. The native should be labeled Stachytarpheta jamaicensis. Learn more from Florida Wildflower Foundation.
