Overview
Necklace pod is a Florida native coastal shrub with velvety silver-green leaves, yellow pea-shaped flowers, and distinctive segmented seed pods. It gives sunny landscapes a soft texture and performs well under salty coastal conditions.
Mature Size
Expect roughly 6 to 10 feet tall and wide. Growth often remains rounded but open. Space plants generously so air moves through the canopy.
Light and Water
Choose full sun. Water regularly until established, then reduce irrigation. Established plants handle drought and salt spray well.
Soil and Drainage
Fast-draining sandy soil is ideal. Necklace pod performs poorly in compacted or constantly wet ground. Do not over-amend a coastal planting site.
Care
Prune selectively after flowering to control size and remove weak branches. Avoid tight shearing. Excess fertilizer produces soft growth and reduces the natural form.
Landscape Uses
Use in coastal gardens, sunny mixed borders, native screens, and pollinator plantings. Its silver foliage pairs well with dark green shrubs and warm-colored flowers.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall works well when irrigation is available. In Tampa, fall planting reduces heat stress while roots establish.
Wildlife and Safety
Flowers attract bees and butterflies. Keep the beadlike seeds away from children and pets because they are not intended for consumption.
