Overview
Parlor palm is a small, refined palm with slender stems and soft arching fronds.
Mature Size and Habit
Outdoors in favorable conditions, it develops slowly to roughly 4 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. Each single stem carries a light crown, while grouped nursery plants create a fuller, clumping appearance.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it beneath high tree canopy, in a shaded narrow bed, as a container accent, or beside a protected outdoor living space.
Sunlight
Shade or bright filtered light is essential.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Grow in fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture and good aeration. Let the surface begin to dry between irrigations, then water thoroughly. Avoid standing water, salty irrigation, and repeated severe drying of containers.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant outdoors in spring after cold risk recedes so roots establish during warm weather. Fall installation works in sheltered Tampa microclimates, while inland Central Florida sites should favor spring and dependable winter protection.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove only fully brown fronds and spent flower or fruit stalks. Never cut the single growing point. Rinse dusty foliage, fertilize palms carefully, and inspect protected leaves for mites, scale, and mealybugs.
Wildlife Value
The palm provides modest shelter and limited food value compared with native shrubs or trees.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Parlor palm prefers warm, humid conditions and suffers from frost, cold wind, and abrupt temperature swings. Outdoor planting is safest in protected zone 10 settings, with containers moved under cover during cold weather.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Roots are compact and generally suitable near sound paving or foundations. Fruit deserves caution around pets and children, and fallen material should be removed. Fronds are soft, but stems still need clearance from narrow paths.
Invasive Concerns
Parlor palm is not considered invasive in Florida landscapes. Remove unwanted fruit before ripening, keep container debris out of natural areas, and replace any volunteer seedlings outside the intended planting bed.
