Overview
Persian shield is a tropical foliage plant grown for iridescent purple leaves marked with silver and deep green.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants usually form an upright, softly branched mound 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. Warm weather encourages rapid growth, and pinching produces a fuller habit suitable for layered tropical compositions.
Best Landscape Uses
Mass it in a shaded border, use it as a vivid container centerpiece, or repeat it beneath palms and filtered tree cover.
Sunlight
Bright filtered light or partial sun preserves rich leaf color without scorching.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil that holds even moisture without becoming waterlogged. Irrigate when the surface begins to dry and mulch the root zone. Dry cycles cause wilt and leaf damage, especially in containers.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Set plants out in spring after cold weather passes so roots establish before summer. Fall planting suits warm coastal Tampa sites, but inland Central Florida gardeners should allow enough time before the first frost.
Pruning and Maintenance
Pinch growing tips to encourage branching and trim leggy stems above a node. Remove cold-damaged growth after winter danger passes, feed modestly during active growth, and inspect leaf undersides for mites or whiteflies.
Wildlife Value
Small winter flowers offer limited wildlife value compared with the ornamental foliage.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
The plant welcomes heat and humidity but wilts during dry heat and suffers in frost. It is root-hardy in parts of Central Florida, while protected Tampa locations often retain more growth through a mild winter.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major thorn, root, or widely documented toxicity concern makes it troublesome in ordinary placement. Keep foliage out of narrow paths to prevent breakage, and place pots where irrigation runoff will not create slippery surfaces.
Invasive Concerns
Persian shield is not considered invasive in Florida. It rarely becomes a landscape weed, yet trimmings and rooted pieces should enter managed yard waste rather than natural areas or drainage channels.
Helpful Resources
Use the UF/IFAS Persian shield profile for Florida-specific notes on light, moisture, mature form, cold tolerance, pinching, and seasonal use.
