Overview

Philodendron Xanadu, now classified as Thaumatophyllum xanadu, is a compact self-heading tropical foliage plant from Brazil. Deeply lobed glossy leaves create dense texture without climbing.

Mature Size and Growth

Plants commonly reach 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Older plants develop short stems and a broad rounded footprint.

Where to Use It

Use in shaded foundation beds, beneath palms, beside pools, in courtyards, or as a massed tropical ground layer. Keep enough clearance from walks for the mature spread.

Light, Soil, and Water

Bright shade, filtered light, or gentle morning sun works best. Plant in organic, well-drained soil and maintain even moisture without saturation. Harsh afternoon sun burns leaves.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant in spring after cold risk decreases. Remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base and protect the central growing points. Mulch lightly without burying stems.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Its primary value is year-round foliage, bold texture, and reliable coverage in low-light beds. It offers limited wildlife benefit compared with Florida native plants.

Important Considerations

This plant is not native to Florida. Calcium oxalate crystals make all parts toxic if chewed and irritating to skin or eyes. Freezes damage foliage. See foliage plant guidance through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
