Overview

Pindo palm is a cold-tolerant feather palm with arching blue-green fronds, a stout trunk, and clusters of aromatic orange fruit. Its graceful form suits Central Florida, including cooler inland sites, although it is native to South America rather than Florida.

Mature Size and Growth

Most specimens reach 15 to 20 feet tall with a canopy 10 to 15 feet wide. Growth is slow to moderate, making it easier to place near one-story architecture than very tall palm species.

Where to Use It

Use as a specimen in lawns, large beds, courtyards, or paired near a broad entrance. Keep fruiting palms away from busy walks, driveways, and pool decks where fallen fruit becomes slippery.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in full sun for a compact crown and strong color. It prefers well-drained soil and becomes fairly drought tolerant after establishment. Deep watering during extended dry weather supports healthier fronds and fruiting.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Late spring through summer is preferred because warm soil speeds root growth. Plant at the original root depth and never pile soil over the trunk base. Remove only fully brown fronds and fertilize with a palm-specific product according to label directions.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

The fruit is edible and aromatic, and the heavy clusters attract wildlife. The silvery foliage adds a strong sculptural accent to mixed tropical and Mediterranean-style plantings.

Important Considerations

Fruit drop and flower stalks require cleanup. Nutrient deficiencies appear as discoloration or distorted growth, so use proper palm nutrition rather than general lawn fertilizer. Consult UF/IFAS palm guidance.
