Overview
Podocarpus, also called Japanese yew, is an Asian evergreen shrub or tree with narrow dark green leaves. It is widely used around Tampa because it tolerates pruning, creates dense screening, and maintains a formal appearance.
Mature Size and Growth
Unpruned plants grow 20 to 40 feet tall, while regular pruning maintains hedges from 4 to 12 feet. Upright forms need less width than many broad-leaved screening shrubs.
Where to Use It
Use it for privacy hedges, narrow screens, foundation backdrops, topiary, entry accents, and small upright trees. It works best where the maintenance plan matches the desired finished size.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Established plants tolerate moderate drought. Water deeply during establishment and avoid beds receiving constant irrigation or roof runoff.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Fall through spring is ideal in Tampa, though container plants establish year-round with proper watering. Prune after growth flushes. Maintain a slightly wider hedge base so lower foliage receives light.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Its dense evergreen foliage provides dependable screening and nesting cover. The restrained texture fits formal South Tampa properties and pairs well with flowering foreground plants.
Important Considerations
Podocarpus is not native to Florida. It becomes a large plant if maintenance stops. Seeds and foliage contain toxic compounds, so do not place fruiting plants where pets or children might eat plant material. Learn more from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
