Overview

A Florida-native deciduous conifer recognized by fine upright branchlets, soft green foliage, and a strong vertical silhouette suited to wet landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Mature specimens commonly reach 40 to 60 feet tall with a 15 to 25 foot spread. The crown stays relatively narrow compared with bald cypress.

Best Landscape Uses

Choose it for rain gardens, pond edges, drainage swales, wet lawns, and large native shade-tree plantings. It needs generous long-term clearance.

Sunlight

Full sun gives the strongest growth and best form. It tolerates some light shade but should not be placed beneath dense tree cover.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

It thrives in moist to seasonally flooded acidic soils and also adapts to average landscape soil after establishment. Keep the root zone consistently moist during the first year.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is the preferred planting window in Tampa. Summer planting requires careful watering and protection from drought during establishment.

Pruning and Maintenance

Little structural pruning is needed beyond removing damaged or competing leaders. Expect seasonal needle drop because this conifer is naturally deciduous.

Wildlife Value

The canopy provides cover for birds, while wetland plantings improve habitat around ponds and stormwater areas. Seeds also support wildlife.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Pond cypress handles Florida heat, humidity, seasonal flooding, and normal winter cold. Drought stress is more damaging than brief cold weather.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

The species develops a substantial root system and should be kept away from septic fields, small drainage structures, foundations, and confined planting beds.

Invasive Concerns

This Florida native is not invasive. Seedlings normally appear only where moisture and open soil create suitable germination conditions.
