Overview

Purple Pixie Loropetalum is a low, cascading evergreen cultivar grown for dark purple leaves and intermittent bright pink fringe flowers.

Mature Size and Habit

Its branches spread outward and downward, creating a broad mound that can trail over a wall or soften the edge of a container. Plan for an established size of about 1 to 2 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a colorful ground cover, slope accent, container spiller, front-of-border mass, or low planting above a retaining wall.

Sunlight

Full sun supports strong purple color, but partial afternoon shade helps on intensely hot, reflective sites without sacrificing too much density.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Provide acidic to neutral, well-drained soil and steady establishment water; avoid saturated low spots and repeated salt spray.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is ideal, giving the shallow root system time to spread before summer heat and heavy rainfall.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim lightly after bloom only when needed to keep paths clear, and preserve the natural cascading shape rather than shearing it into a tight box.

Wildlife Value

The fringe flowers can attract bees and butterflies, though this cultivar contributes less habitat value than a diverse native ground layer.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It is well adapted to Central Florida warmth when drainage is good; drought, reflected heat, or a hard freeze can cause temporary leaf scorch.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major toxicity or invasive-root issue is commonly reported, but its broad spread can cover edging or small plants if installed too close.

Invasive Concerns

This nonnative cultivar is not listed as invasive in Florida, yet occasional seedlings or layering stems should be removed beyond the intended bed.

Helpful Resources

For identification, care, and Florida landscape context, review Clemson Cooperative Extension's loropetalum profile. Site conditions vary, so use local soil, drainage, and exposure observations to refine care.
