Overview
Queen Emma Crinum Lily combines broad burgundy-green leaves with tall clusters of fragrant white spider-like flowers. The large tropical form creates strong color and structure in South Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
A mature clump commonly reaches 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. Thick bulbs produce arching leaves and offsets that slowly expand the planting over time.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a specimen, poolside accent, foundation feature, large border plant, or dramatic container subject. Give the permanent clump room to widen.
Sunlight
Full sun supports strong flower production, while partial sun protects foliage from extreme reflected heat. Deep shade reduces flowering and weakens the habit.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Crinums adapt to sandy or organically amended soil and tolerate short dry periods after establishment. Moderate irrigation produces the best foliage, but bulbs should not remain in stagnant water.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early fall is ideal because warm soil promotes root and bulb growth. Established clumps are long lived, so choose the final location carefully.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove yellow leaves and spent flower stalks at the base. Divide crowded offsets during cooler weather only when the clump outgrows its space.
Wildlife Value
Fragrant flowers draw bees, butterflies, and other visiting insects. The dense foliage also offers low cover for small garden wildlife.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat and humidity suit this crinum. Frost can burn exposed leaves, but established bulbs usually recover when warm weather returns.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Crinum foliage and bulbs contain toxic alkaloids and should not be eaten by people or pets. Wear gloves when dividing bulbs and keep the large leaves clear of narrow walks.
Invasive Concerns
This ornamental spreads mainly by offsets in maintained landscapes. Remove unwanted divisions and dispose of seed or bulbs responsibly rather than placing them in natural areas.
