Overview
Queen palm is a tall nonnative palm with a smooth gray trunk and long arching fronds. It creates a fast tropical canopy but requires thoughtful placement and nutritional care in Tampa.
Mature Size
Expect 30 to 50 feet in height with a crown 15 to 25 feet wide.
Light and Water
Plant in full sun. Water deeply during establishment and during long droughts. Avoid constant shallow irrigation.
Soil and Drainage
Well-drained soil is essential. Florida's sandy soils often require a palm-specific nutrition program performed under current local rules.
Care
Remove only fully brown fronds. Never hurricane-cut the crown. Monitor for nutrient deficiencies, trunk damage, and palm diseases.
Landscape Uses
Use as a tall accent where falling fruit and fronds will not threaten roofs, vehicles, pools, or walkways.
Best Planting Time
Late spring through summer supports root growth in warm soil.
Tampa Notes
Cold weather may burn fronds. Fruit litter and ongoing nutrient needs make this palm less suitable for low-maintenance properties.
Florida Resource
Use the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping Plant Guide to compare regional conditions and placement options.
