Overview

Railroad vine is a fast-spreading Florida native groundcover recognized by thick two-lobed leaves and vivid pink-purple morning-glory flowers. It naturally stabilizes coastal dunes and thrives in heat, sun, wind, and salty conditions.

Mature Size and Growth

The foliage remains about 6 to 12 inches high, while running stems can extend 20 feet or more. Growth is rapid in warm weather, making it suitable only where it has room to travel.

Where to Use It

Use on sandy slopes, broad sunny banks, coastal gardens, and large erosion-prone areas. It is less suitable for narrow beds, formal borders, or sites where runners would cross walks and lawns.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in full sun and very well-drained sandy soil. Water until established, then keep irrigation limited. Mature plants tolerate drought and salt spray but decline in shaded, rich, or constantly wet ground.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Install in spring or early summer after cold risk has eased, especially in inland Central Florida. Space plants generously and guide runners across bare soil. Trim wandering stems as needed.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Flowers support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The extensive runners help hold loose sand and create valuable coastal habitat.

Important Considerations

Railroad vine is sensitive to hard freezes and is best in the warmest Tampa-area microclimates. Its aggressive spread is an asset on dunes but a maintenance issue in small gardens. Learn more at the Florida Wildflower Foundation.
