Overview
Red Banana is a dramatic ornamental ensete with oversized green leaves flushed burgundy and red through the midrib and blade.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants commonly reach 8 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide in warm, well-watered gardens.
Best Landscape Uses
Feature it as a specimen, anchor a tropical border, frame a pool from a safe setback, or grow a younger plant in a very large container.
Sunlight
Full sun creates the richest red color when moisture is reliable. Partial sun is acceptable and may reduce midday stress.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in fertile, organic, well-drained soil and irrigate consistently during active growth.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant in spring after cold risk has eased so the plant can establish through the long warm season.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove only damaged or collapsed leaves by cutting close to the pseudostem. Do not top a healthy plant.
Wildlife Value
The foliage provides temporary shelter but limited dependable food for native wildlife.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Red Banana loves heat and humidity but is cold sensitive. Frost can severely damage foliage and the growing point.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
There are no spines, but the mature plant is heavy and occupies substantial space.
Invasive Concerns
This cultivated ensete is nonnative and is not known for aggressive spread in Central Florida landscapes.
