Overview
Red Florida Anise is a Florida-native evergreen shrub with glossy aromatic leaves and unusual maroon flowers made of narrow strap-like petals. It brings dense structure to shaded Tampa landscapes where many flowering shrubs lose vigor.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants commonly reach 6 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide with an upright, multi-stemmed habit. Root suckers may slowly enlarge the colony.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a shaded privacy screen, evergreen hedge, woodland backdrop, rain-garden shrub, or foundation anchor. Its natural form looks best with room to broaden.
Sunlight
Partial sun, filtered light, or shade is preferred. Strong afternoon sun may scorch foliage, especially in dry sites.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Florida Anise prefers acidic soil rich in organic matter with regular moisture and dependable drainage. It tolerates occasionally wet ground, but prolonged stagnant water weakens roots. Mulch the root zone and irrigate during drought.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring is ideal. Cooler weather helps roots establish before summer heat and heavy rain.
Pruning and Maintenance
Thin crowded stems after flowering and remove unwanted suckers at their origin. Avoid tight shearing, which hides flowers and leaves bare interior wood. Serious pest problems are uncommon.
Wildlife Value
Spring flowers support pollinators, while dense evergreen branching offers shelter for small birds and other garden wildlife.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Established plants handle Tampa summers when soil stays moist. Harsh sun and drought cause leaf scorch. Brief Central Florida cold is usually tolerated, though exposed new growth may burn.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Leaves and seeds are poisonous if eaten and must never be confused with culinary star anise. Place away from edible gardens, pets, and young children. Spreading roots need room beside walks and foundations.
Invasive Concerns
This species is native to Florida and is not invasive. Manage root suckers when a formal hedge line or narrow bed requires a fixed boundary.
