Overview
Red maple is a fast-growing Florida native shade tree valued for its upright canopy, red spring flowers, colorful seeds, and variable red, orange, or yellow fall foliage. Florida-grown selections are best suited to the Tampa and Central Florida climate.
Mature Size and Growth
Expect roughly 40 to 60 feet in height and 25 to 40 feet in spread. Young trees grow quickly and benefit from early structural pruning to develop one strong central leader and well-spaced branches.
Where to Use It
Use as a lawn shade tree, a specimen near ponds, or in large rain-garden and naturalized areas. Keep it well away from pavement, foundations, overhead utilities, and small planting islands.
Light, Soil, and Water
Full sun to light shade produces the best canopy. Red maple adapts to moist, acidic soil and tolerates periodic flooding, but it also grows in average landscape soil when watered during establishment. Avoid highly alkaline sites.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant in late fall through winter, when cooler weather reduces transplant stress. Water deeply and regularly for the first one to two years. Maintain a broad mulch ring and prune young growth for sound structure.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Early flowers provide resources for insects, while seeds and canopy cover benefit birds and small wildlife. The tree adds seasonal character that is uncommon in many subtropical landscapes.
Important Considerations
Surface roots and falling seeds make it a poor choice beside narrow walks or patios. Select locally adapted nursery stock. See Florida-friendly tree guidance from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
