Overview
A majestic Florida-native palm with a smooth light-gray trunk, bright green crownshaft, and towering canopy that creates a formal tropical statement on spacious properties.
Mature Size and Habit
It grows quickly to 50 to 70 feet tall with a 20 to 25 foot crown. The large trunk and heavy fronds demand generous clearance.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it along broad driveways, large lawns, commercial entrances, or estate-scale tropical landscapes. It is too large for small yards, narrow setbacks, and confined pool decks.
Sunlight
Full sun produces the best trunk and canopy development. Young palms tolerate brief partial shade but need open overhead space for long-term growth.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in deep, well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Royal palms respond to regular water and a palm-specific fertilizer program containing magnesium and micronutrients.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Late spring through summer is the preferred planting period in Tampa because warm soil supports fast root recovery. Large palms need correct depth, bracing, and irrigation.
Pruning and Maintenance
This palm naturally drops old leaves. Remove only damaged or hazardous fronds when needed and never cut healthy green growth above the horizontal line.
Wildlife Value
Flowers and fruit support pollinators, birds, and mammals. The species also serves as a host for native insects, adding habitat value in suitable large landscapes.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat and humidity are ideal. Temperatures near 28 degrees can damage foliage and growing tissue, so South Tampa microclimates provide the best local placement.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Mature fronds can exceed 50 pounds and fall without warning. Keep the canopy away from roofs, vehicles, walkways, seating areas, utilities, and pools.
Invasive Concerns
Royal palm is native to southern Florida and is not considered invasive. Seedlings can appear beneath fruiting palms and are easy to remove while young.
