Overview
Sago palm is a slow-growing nonnative cycad rather than a true palm. Its symmetrical crown and stiff glossy fronds create a formal architectural look. Mature plants develop a thick trunk over many years.
Mature Size
Plants often reach 6 to 10 feet tall and wide over time. Growth is slow, but mature spread must be considered near doors, sidewalks, and driveways.
Light and Water
Full sun to partial shade works well. Water deeply during establishment, then allow the soil to dry between irrigation cycles. Overwatering causes serious root problems.
Soil and Drainage
Excellent drainage is essential. Sandy soil is suitable. Avoid low, irrigated beds and locations receiving roof runoff.
Care
Remove only yellow, damaged, or fully dead fronds. Cutting green fronds weakens the plant. Monitor for cycad aulacaspis scale, a damaging pest common in Florida.
Landscape Uses
Use as a specimen, formal entry accent, or large container plant. Keep stiff fronds away from narrow walks and play areas.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall supports root growth. Water carefully during the establishment period.
Critical Safety Concern
Every part of sago palm is highly toxic to people and animals. Seeds present the greatest risk. Do not use it where pets or children might chew or collect plant parts.
Florida Resource
Review regional plant guidance through the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping Plant Guide.
