Overview

A bold Florida-native bunchgrass with arching evergreen blades and tall flowering stems, prized for texture, movement, and resilience in wet or dry landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Clumps typically reach 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. The fountain-like habit becomes substantial, so spacing must reflect the mature diameter.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a large accent, rain-garden anchor, pond-edge mass, coastal buffer, or erosion-control planting. It works best where its sweeping foliage has room.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the strongest clumps and most upright form. Partial sun is tolerated but often results in looser growth.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Sand cordgrass handles moist, periodically flooded, and average well-drained soils. It becomes drought tolerant after establishment yet also accepts seasonal wetness.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from spring through early fall for rapid rooting, or during mild Tampa winters with regular water. Space plants well to reduce future crowding.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cut old foliage back once yearly in late winter before new growth begins, using gloves and sharp tools. Avoid frequent trimming during the growing season.

Wildlife Value

Dense clumps provide shelter and nesting material for birds and small wildlife. Seeds and associated insects add food value to habitat gardens.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It thrives in Florida heat, humidity, wind, salt exposure, flooding, and drought. Cold weather usually causes only temporary foliage discoloration.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Leaf edges are coarse and can cut skin, so place the mature clump away from narrow walks, play areas, and frequently handled spaces.

Invasive Concerns

Sand cordgrass is a clumping Florida native and is not invasive. It expands gradually at the base rather than running through the landscape.
