Overview
Sandankwa viburnum is a dense evergreen shrub from Asia with leathery dark green leaves and small white flower clusters. It handles heat and pruning well, making it a familiar foundation and screening shrub in Tampa.
Mature Size and Growth
Plants commonly reach 6 to 12 feet tall and wide. Growth is moderate to fast with irrigation and fertilizer. Regular selective pruning keeps the shrub full without producing a hard outer shell.
Where to Use It
Use as a medium privacy hedge, foundation backdrop, property divider, or large rounded specimen. Provide enough room so mature growth does not cover windows or crowd walkways.
Light, Soil, and Water
Full sun to partial shade works well. Plant in well-drained soil and water consistently during establishment. Once rooted, it tolerates short dry periods but looks best with deep irrigation during drought.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring in Tampa. Prune after flowering or after active growth flushes. Thin selected branches to improve airflow and avoid repeated severe shearing into bare wood.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers attract insect visitors, while dense evergreen branches provide cover. Its primary value is dependable screening and a substantial green backdrop for flowering plants.
Important Considerations
Sandankwa viburnum is not native to Florida. Watch for scale, thrips, leaf spots, and root stress in wet sites. Space plants for mature width. See shrub guidance from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
