Overview

Sea oats are a Florida native coastal grass with arching stems and flat oat-like seed heads. Deep roots and spreading rhizomes help stabilize dunes and sandy coastal soil.

Mature Size

Foliage reaches about 2 to 3 feet while flowering stems often rise 4 to 6 feet.

Light and Water

Plant in full sun. Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation. Mature plants handle drought, salt spray, wind, and blowing sand.

Soil and Drainage

Dry, fast-draining coastal sand is ideal. Sea oats decline in wet or heavily irrigated beds.

Care

Remove dead foliage near the end of winter if a tidier appearance is desired. Avoid cutting active green growth too low.

Landscape Uses

Use for dune stabilization, beachfront restoration, coastal screens, and naturalistic sandy gardens.

Best Planting Time

Spring through early fall supports active rooting when supplemental water is available.

Responsible Use

Purchase nursery-grown plants. Never remove sea oats from natural dunes or disturb established dune systems.
