Overview
Shenandoah Switchgrass is an upright selection of Florida-native switchgrass with blue-green blades that develop burgundy-red tips and fall color. Reddish panicles float above the foliage.
Mature Size and Habit
This warm-season perennial forms a narrow, slowly expanding clump about 4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, rising from the crown each spring.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in sunny borders, native gardens, rain gardens, erosion-control plantings, or repeated masses. Its vertical form softens walls, fences, and hard edges.
Sunlight
Full sun gives the densest growth, strongest stems, and vivid red color. Partial sun is tolerated, but shaded plants may lean and color less intensely.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Switchgrass adapts to sandy, clay, moist, and periodically wet soils when the crown is not buried. Water through establishment; afterward it tolerates drought and rain-garden conditions.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from fall through early spring, or during warm weather with dependable irrigation. Space plants for mature width and humid-weather airflow.
Pruning and Maintenance
Leave tan winter stems for texture and bird cover, then cut to 6–10 inches in late winter before new shoots emerge. Divide crowded clumps in spring and watch for rust where airflow is poor.
Wildlife Value
Airy seed heads feed birds and small mammals, while dense stems provide seasonal shelter and nesting material. The native species also supports local insects.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Florida heat, sun, and summer rain suit this grass. Top growth turns tan after cold weather, but established crowns return in spring; do not keep dormant crowns wet.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
It has no thorns and is not known for major toxicity, but dry stems are highly flammable. Keep clumps away from buildings, grills, and ignition sources, and remove dry material before spring growth.
Invasive Concerns
Panicum virgatum is native to Florida and is not treated as invasive. Shenandoah expands gradually by short rhizomes and may seed, so remove unwanted volunteers.
