Overview
Silver buttonwood is a naturally silver-leaved variety of the Florida native buttonwood. Its velvety foliage creates strong color contrast and handles coastal exposure better than many gray-foliage shrubs.
Mature Size and Growth
It grows as a shrub or small tree, often reaching 10 to 20 feet in maintained landscapes and larger in favorable warm sites. Selective pruning develops attractive multi-trunk character.
Where to Use It
Use it as a specimen, coastal hedge, poolside accent, entry feature, or contrasting backdrop for dark green foliage. It performs best in warm Tampa Bay microclimates with strong sun and excellent drainage.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun and well-drained sandy or limestone-influenced soil. It tolerates salt spray and drought after establishment. Water new plants deeply, then let the upper soil begin drying between cycles.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant in spring or early summer so roots establish before cool weather. Prune selectively during warm growth. Keep mulch away from the trunk and avoid buried root flares.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Dense branches offer shelter and the button-like fruits add botanical interest. Silver foliage brightens coastal and contemporary landscapes without relying on flowers.
Important Considerations
It is native primarily to southern and coastal Florida and is cold sensitive around Tampa. Use protected sites and expect damage during hard freezes. Overwatering and shade reduce density and silver color. Learn more from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
