Overview
A tall Florida-native evergreen pine with glossy needles, plated bark, and a clean trunk that creates authentic coastal-plain character in large landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
It commonly reaches 60 to 80 feet tall with a 25 to 40 foot crown. Young trees grow quickly and become too large for narrow residential spaces.
Best Landscape Uses
Choose slash pine for native buffers, woodland restoration, large shade areas, erosion control, and naturalized coastal landscapes. Provide extensive overhead clearance.
Sunlight
Full sun produces the healthiest crown and strongest trunk. Avoid shaded courtyards and locations crowded by existing canopy trees.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
It accepts moist acidic sand and seasonally wet flatwoods soil, yet established trees tolerate moderate dry spells. Water deeply during the first growing season.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant during fall, winter, or early spring for steady root establishment. Summer installations need consistent irrigation and close monitoring through storms.
Pruning and Maintenance
Train one central leader when young and remove damaged branches cleanly. Mature pruning and risk assessment should be completed by a qualified tree professional.
Wildlife Value
The seeds and canopy support birds and other wildlife, while native insects use the foliage and bark. The tree provides valuable vertical habitat.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Slash pine is well adapted to Tampa heat, humidity, heavy rain, and ordinary freezes. Wind exposure makes correct planting depth and sound branch structure important.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Allow generous distance from buildings, driveways, pools, and power lines. Needle, cone, and branch litter is normal, and roots need broad uncompacted soil.
Invasive Concerns
This Florida native is not invasive. Seedlings sometimes appear in sunny open soil and can be removed early where they are not wanted.
