Overview
Society garlic is a clumping South African perennial with narrow gray-green leaves and lavender star-shaped flower clusters. Crushed foliage smells like garlic, though flowers provide a lighter ornamental presence.
Mature Size and Growth
Plants reach about 12 to 24 inches tall and wide. Clumps expand gradually from short rhizomes and form a tidy low border.
Where to Use It
Use along sunny walkways, in herb-style gardens, around patios, in containers, or as a repeated flowering border. It pairs well with palms, grasses, and silver foliage.
Light, Soil, and Water
Full sun produces the strongest flowering. Plant in well-drained soil. Water regularly while roots establish, then allow modest drying between irrigation cycles.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring. Remove faded flower stalks and brown leaves. Divide crowded clumps in spring or fall and replant at the same depth.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinators. The long warm-season bloom adds steady color to small beds.
Important Considerations
Society garlic is not native to Florida. The garlic odor becomes noticeable when foliage is cut or crushed. It tolerates light frost but might brown after a hard freeze. See ornamental guidance from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
