Overview
Sparkleberry is a Florida native small tree related to blueberries. It develops fine branching, white bell-shaped spring flowers, dark berries, and attractive peeling bark.
Mature Size
Allow 15 to 30 feet in height and 10 to 20 feet in width. Growth is usually slow to moderate.
Light and Water
Full sun to partial shade works well. Water regularly during establishment. Mature trees tolerate dry sandy sites.
Soil and Drainage
Acidic, well-drained sandy soil is essential. Avoid alkaline fill soil and overwatering.
Care
Prune lightly to develop a clean structure while preserving the natural branching. Avoid heavy fertilizer and lime near the root zone.
Landscape Uses
Use as a native specimen, woodland-edge tree, wildlife-garden feature, or small canopy tree beneath open pines.
Best Planting Time
Fall through winter gives roots the longest cool establishment period.
Wildlife Value
Flowers support pollinators. Berries provide food for birds and other wildlife.
