Overview
Split-Leaf Philodendron is a self-heading tropical foliage plant with enormous, deeply cut green leaves. Its bold texture creates an immediate resort-style effect in protected South Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
Mature plants can reach 8 to 10 feet tall and spread equally wide. Older stems form a short trunk, while long leaf stalks carry a broad arching canopy.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a shaded foundation accent, courtyard specimen, poolside feature, tropical border plant, or oversized container subject. Allow generous clearance around the mature canopy.
Sunlight
Partial sun and bright shade produce rich foliage with lower scorch risk. Acclimated plants tolerate more sun when irrigation is dependable, while deep shade loosens the habit.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in organically enriched, well-drained soil and irrigate consistently during establishment. Established plants tolerate short dry periods but perform best with moderate moisture.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early fall provides warm soil and fast rooting. Protected fall planting is also suitable when the plant is not exposed to a north wind.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove only damaged or declining leaves at the base of the stalk. Do not cut the central growing point, and clean tools before moving between plants.
Wildlife Value
The large canopy provides limited shelter for small wildlife but little dependable nectar or fruit value. Its main contribution is structural foliage.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Tampa heat and humidity support vigorous growth. Frost can burn leaves, and hard freezes can damage stems, so protected urban locations perform best.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if chewed by people or pets. Sap can irritate skin. Keep the broad leaves away from narrow walks, doors, and pool equipment.
Invasive Concerns
This South American ornamental is not considered a major invasive landscape plant in Florida. Remove unwanted offsets and keep discarded material out of natural areas.
