Overview

Stella de Oro is a compact repeat-blooming daylily valued for golden yellow flowers above arching green foliage.

Mature Size and Habit

Mature clumps typically reach about 12 to 18 inches tall and spread 18 to 24 inches. Individual flowers last one day, while successive buds extend the show and the dense foliage holds a neat fountain shape.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it along sunny walks, at the front of mixed borders, in repeated foundation groups, or in containers.

Sunlight

Full sun promotes the best bloom count, though partial sun is useful during the hottest part of a Florida afternoon.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and provide even moisture during active growth. Established clumps tolerate short dry periods, but regular irrigation supports repeat bloom. Avoid soggy ground and mulch piled over the crown.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant or divide in early spring or fall, the preferred daylily seasons for Florida. Cooler conditions reduce transplant stress and allow roots to settle before intense summer heat or an unexpected winter cold snap.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove faded flower stalks, pull yellow leaves, and divide crowded clumps every few years. Cut damaged foliage only as needed, feed lightly in spring, and monitor for aphids, thrips, rust, and daylily leaf streak.

Wildlife Value

Flowers receive visits from bees, butterflies, and other insects, though this cultivated daylily is not a native host plant.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Roots and crowns tolerate Central Florida winters, while flowers and foliage prefer moderate temperatures. Afternoon shade, mulch, and steady moisture reduce summer stress. Hard freezes damage top growth without usually killing established clumps.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Daylilies contain compounds dangerous to cats and should stay out of pet browsing areas. Keep clumps clear of narrow walk edges, and do not confuse ornamental daylilies with edible plants despite the common name.

Invasive Concerns

Stella de Oro is not generally treated as invasive in maintained Florida landscapes. Remove unwanted divisions and seed capsules, dispose of plant material responsibly, and prevent spread beyond managed beds near natural areas.
