Overview
Storm Cloud Agapanthus is a compact evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial with dark blue-purple summer flowers above dense strap-shaped foliage. This nonnative cultivar suits maintained Tampa beds.
Mature Size and Habit
The leafy clump is usually 1 to 2 feet tall and 1 to 3 feet wide, with upright flower stalks above it. Small umbels and compact growth distinguish it from taller selections.
Best Landscape Uses
Use Storm Cloud along sunny walks, in the front or middle of a mixed border, in repeated masses, or as a container accent. Dark blooms contrast with silver or chartreuse foliage.
Sunlight
Full sun supports compact growth and strong flowering. Partial sun works in hot Tampa sites with bright morning light, but excessive shade reduces blooms and may cause leaning.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Use enriched soil that drains quickly after summer rain. Water regularly during establishment, then maintain moderate moisture without saturation. Use raised beds where soil stays wet.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from fall through spring to limit transplant stress. Summer planting requires consistent irrigation and close monitoring until roots extend into the surrounding soil.
Pruning and Maintenance
Cut faded flower stalks near the base and remove damaged leaves. Divide when the clump becomes congested or flowering declines. Keep mulch away from the crown.
Wildlife Value
Summer flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Limit broad-spectrum pesticides and add nearby plants with different bloom seasons.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Established plants tolerate Central Florida heat with moisture and drainage. Frost may scorch leaves. Shelter containers and protect newly installed plants during hard freezes.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Foliage and sap can irritate skin and eyes, and ingestion may irritate the mouth and stomach. Wear gloves, keep pets and children from chewing it, and keep leaves clear of walks.
Invasive Concerns
Agapanthus has escaped cultivation in some regions. Remove unwanted seedlings, contain expanding rhizomes, and never discard live divisions in natural areas.
