Overview
Swamp milkweed is a Florida native wetland milkweed with white flowers often touched with pale pink. It serves as a host plant for monarch and queen butterfly caterpillars.
Mature Size
Plants commonly reach 1 to 2 feet tall and form small clumps.
Light and Water
Full sun to partial shade works well. Consistent moisture is essential. This species tolerates shallow seasonal flooding.
Soil and Drainage
Use moist or wet soil near ponds, rain gardens, swales, or low areas. It is not suited to dry foundation beds.
Care
Avoid pesticides on or near milkweed used by caterpillars. Remove damaged stems only after checking for eggs and larvae.
Landscape Uses
Use in moist pollinator gardens and naturalized wet areas with compatible native flowers.
Best Planting Time
Fall through spring is ideal. Keep roots moist throughout establishment.
Wildlife and Safety
This plant supports monarchs and other pollinators. Milky sap may irritate skin and is toxic if eaten.
