Overview

Sweetheart hoya is an Asian tropical vine with thick, heart-shaped green leaves. It suits protected container displays. Photos illustrate established growth, not the supplied 2-inch pot.

Mature Size and Habit

A stem-bearing plant climbs or trails several feet over time. Reserve 3–6 feet along a support, adjusting by training. A rooted single leaf needs stem tissue to develop a growing vine.

Best Landscape Uses

Use a small trellis, elevated container, or hanging display on a sheltered patio. An indoor position is practical when winter protection or outdoor drainage is difficult.

Sunlight

Provide bright filtered light or gentle morning sun after acclimation. Avoid intense afternoon exposure and abrupt moves between dark interiors and outdoor sun.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use a loose organic mix with excellent drainage. Water with room-temperature water and allow some drying between applications. Oversized pots retain moisture and invite root rot.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Repot during warm spring growth when roots need room. For Tampa patios, begin outdoor displays after cold fronts ease and protect newly placed plants from heavy rain.

Pruning and Maintenance

Guide stems onto supports without cutting bare new growth, which precedes leaves or flowers. Inspect for mites, aphids, and mealybugs, and retain healthy flowering spurs.

Wildlife Value

Mature vines produce fragrant waxy blooms, while young plants often flower reluctantly. Treat this ornamental as foliage interest rather than dependable Florida wildlife habitat.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Warm, humid conditions support growth. Move containers indoors before cold fronts and keep them away from frost, cold drafts, and sudden temperature changes.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Flower nectar drips and stains furnishings. Place mature flowering plants accordingly, secure trellises, and prevent children or pets from chewing ornamental leaves.

Invasive Concerns

Hoya kerrii originates outside Florida. Keep twining stems contained and collect cuttings so they remain within cultivation rather than reaching neighboring natural areas.
