Overview
Ti plant is a tropical evergreen grown for dramatic burgundy, red, pink, green, or variegated leaves. It creates instant color in protected Tampa-area gardens but is native to tropical Asia and the Pacific, not Florida.
Mature Size and Growth
Plants commonly reach 3 to 6 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide, with some cultivars growing larger. Upright cane-like stems develop multiple leafy heads and can be cut back to encourage branching.
Where to Use It
Use as a colorful accent in shaded entry beds, courtyards, poolside containers, tropical borders, and beneath high tree canopies. Containers make winter protection easier in colder inland locations.
Light, Soil, and Water
Bright filtered light or morning sun gives the best color without scorching leaves. Use rich, well-drained soil and maintain even moisture. Avoid standing water, harsh afternoon sun, and irrigation water that repeatedly spots the foliage.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant after nights have warmed in spring. Mulch the root zone and water during dry spells. Remove damaged leaves at the stem, and cut tall bare canes back in warm weather to stimulate fresh shoots.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
The chief landscape value is year-round foliage color and bold texture, especially in areas where flowering plants receive too little sun.
Important Considerations
Frost can kill foliage and damage canes, so choose a sheltered microclimate or move containers indoors during freezes. The plant is toxic to dogs and cats if eaten. Find tropical foliage care at UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
