Overview
Variegated False Agave is an architectural tropical succulent with broad leaves striped through the center in creamy yellow and edged in green.
Mature Size and Habit
Expect a rosette roughly 4 to 6 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide in favorable Tampa gardens. Growth is usually more measured than the solid-green form.
Best Landscape Uses
Use one plant as a high-contrast accent, repeat it along a broad entry, or feature it in a large container.
Sunlight
Bright partial sun gives strong color with less risk of bleaching. Established plants also grow in full sun, though newly installed foliage benefits from gradual exposure to intense afternoon light.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Excellent drainage matters more than rich soil. Amend compacted sites, mound the root zone if needed, and water during establishment.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
October through March is ideal for planting in Tampa and Central Florida.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove brown lower leaves individually and take away unwanted plantlets. Avoid shearing, which ruins the natural rosette.
Wildlife Value
The plant has limited everyday wildlife value, although an eventual flower stalk may serve visiting pollinators.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It performs well in heat, humidity, and coastal conditions if the root zone drains freely.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Allow wide clearance because mature leaves arch outward and may obstruct movement. Sap can irritate skin and eyes.
Invasive Concerns
Flowering plants may form many small plantlets capable of rooting. Monitor the bed and remove volunteers.
