Overview
Virginia blue flag is a Florida native wetland iris with violet-blue spring flowers and upright swordlike leaves. It gives rain gardens and pond edges a clean vertical accent.
Mature Size
Plants normally reach 2 to 3 feet tall and spread through rhizomes into broad clumps.
Light and Water
Full sun to partial shade is suitable. Consistent moisture supports flowering. The plant tolerates shallow seasonal water.
Soil and Drainage
Use moist or wet acidic soil. It performs well at pond margins and in low rain-garden zones.
Care
Remove old flower stalks and brown foliage. Divide thick clumps every few years to maintain vigor and control spread.
Landscape Uses
Use along pond edges, in bioswales, rain gardens, or wet native borders. Avoid dry foundation beds.
Best Planting Time
Fall through early spring is ideal. Keep rhizomes moist during establishment.
Wildlife and Safety
Flowers support pollinators. Rhizomes and foliage may cause illness if eaten.
