Overview
White bird of paradise is a bold, clumping tropical foliage plant with tall stems and huge paddle-shaped leaves. Mature plants may produce white-and-blue birdlike flowers.
Mature Size and Habit
In Central Florida it can reach about 20 to 30 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide, forming a broad multi-stemmed clump.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a tropical screen, architectural accent, or poolside backdrop where its mature spread will not crowd structures.
Sunlight
Full sun produces sturdy growth, while partial sun helps keep foliage greener in exposed Tampa sites.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Water consistently during establishment and during extended dry weather, but do not leave roots in standing water.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from spring through early fall while soil is warm. Provide reliable irrigation during establishment.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove damaged leaves and old flower stalks at the base. Thin crowded stems selectively instead of shearing the plant.
Wildlife Value
The large clump provides shelter, though the plant is valued primarily for foliage and form.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Hard freezes can burn foliage or kill exposed stems. Use a protected microclimate and allow room for wind-tattered leaves.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Seeds and plant parts may cause digestive upset if eaten and can be a concern for pets. Sap may irritate sensitive skin.
Invasive Concerns
It is not native to Florida and is not generally considered invasive in maintained landscapes.
