Overview
A graceful Florida-native small tree celebrated for clouds of fragrant white fringe-like flowers, soft green foliage, and blue-black fruit on female plants.
Mature Size and Habit
It typically reaches 12 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide with a rounded, often multi-trunked form. Growth is deliberate rather than fast.
Best Landscape Uses
Feature it as a specimen near patios, entries, woodland edges, or mixed native borders. Position it where spring bloom is easy to see and enjoy.
Sunlight
Full sun produces the heaviest flowering, while partial sun helps in hotter inland sites. Dense shade reduces bloom and creates open growth.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Provide moist, fertile, well-drained acidic soil. Water regularly during establishment and during extended drought, but never leave the root crown buried.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring is ideal for Tampa planting. Mulch broadly, keep mulch away from trunks, and maintain dependable moisture for the first year.
Pruning and Maintenance
Little pruning is needed beyond removing dead wood and selecting a pleasing trunk structure. Prune after flowering so next season’s display is not reduced.
Wildlife Value
Flowers support bees and other pollinators, and the fruit is eaten by birds. A female plant needs nearby compatible pollen for dependable fruit production.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It tolerates Central Florida heat when soil moisture is adequate and handles normal winter cold. Hot reflected sites and salt spray are poor choices.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Roots are generally well behaved, but allow room for the mature crown. Fallen fruit and flowers create light seasonal litter near paving.
Invasive Concerns
White fringetree is Florida native and not invasive. Seedlings are uncommon in maintained landscapes and do not create a management problem.
