Overview
A resilient Florida-native deciduous tree named for the corky wings on its twigs, with a fine-textured crown and dependable shade for larger landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
It typically reaches 35 to 50 feet tall and 25 to 40 feet wide. The crown is rounded to vase shaped and becomes increasingly graceful with age.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a shade tree, native street tree where adequate soil exists, or canopy element in naturalized landscapes. Provide room for both roots and crown.
Sunlight
Full sun creates the strongest structure and densest canopy. Partial sun is tolerated, particularly while the tree is young.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Winged elm adapts to a broad range of well-drained soils, including sandy and clay conditions. Water deeply during establishment, then irrigate only during extended drought.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from late fall through early spring while the tree is dormant or growing slowly. Correct root flare placement is critical for long-term health.
Pruning and Maintenance
Young trees benefit from structural pruning that selects one leader and evenly spaced scaffold branches. Mature pruning should focus on dead or damaged wood.
Wildlife Value
The canopy provides nesting and cover, while seeds and associated insects support birds and small wildlife. Native tree diversity strengthens the urban habitat.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It handles Tampa heat, humidity, periodic drought, and normal winter cold. Proper early structure improves resistance to storms.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Keep this medium-to-large tree away from foundations, small planting islands, pools, and overhead utilities. Seasonal leaf and seed litter is expected.
Invasive Concerns
Winged elm is Florida native and not invasive. Occasional seedlings in open soil are easily removed when young.
