Overview

A signature Florida-native bunchgrass with very fine arching blades and airy seed stems, creating natural texture associated with longleaf pine and flatwoods habitats.

Mature Size and Habit

Clumps generally reach 2 to 3 feet tall and about 2 feet wide, with flowering stems extending higher. It remains neatly clumping rather than spreading by runners.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in native meadows, dry borders, pine understories, erosion-control plantings, and naturalistic masses. Repetition best expresses its soft flowing texture.

Sunlight

Full sun is essential for a dense clump and reliable flowering. Open pine shade is tolerated when direct sunlight remains abundant.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Wiregrass prefers acidic, nutrient-poor, rapidly drained sand. Water during establishment, then avoid fertilizer and frequent irrigation because lean conditions produce stronger plants.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is an excellent planting period in Tampa, though container plants establish year-round with water. Do not bury the crown.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove old foliage in late winter by carefully cutting it back before spring growth. Managed fire is an ecological tool, not a residential maintenance method.

Wildlife Value

Clumps provide cover, nesting material, and habitat for insects and small wildlife. The species also supports the structure of diverse native pine landscapes.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It is highly adapted to Florida heat, drought, and normal winter cold. Poor drainage and rich constantly wet soil are the main threats.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

The wiry foliage is best set back from narrow paths and play areas. Dense old growth should be maintained so it does not trap litter.

Invasive Concerns

Wiregrass is a clumping Florida native and not invasive. It grows slowly and will not run through nearby beds.
