Edging a Paver Driveway: Close the Gap

Rocks

Why the Edge Matters

The outer row of a paver driveway depends on firm lateral support. When soil erodes or a landscape bed pulls away, a visible gap forms beside the pavers. Without support, traffic and rainfall slowly push perimeter units outward. Joints widen, sand disappears, weeds establish, and the clean driveway line begins to fail.

Inspect Before Filling

Look for loose pavers, sunken sections, washed-out base, missing restraint, open joints, and water flowing along the driveway edge. A cosmetic gap is different from structural movement. If the pavers rock under pressure or the base has eroded, adding mulch or loose soil beside them will hide the warning sign without restoring support.

Restore Proper Support

A sound repair exposes the edge, restores and compacts the base where needed, and installs or repairs an appropriate edge restraint. The surrounding grade should meet the driveway cleanly without covering the paver surface. Joint sand should match the paver system and installation requirements. Every layer needs support so the repair survives vehicle loads and summer rain.

Keep Water Moving Away

Roof discharge, irrigation overspray, and poorly graded beds often wash soil away from driveway edges. Correct the water source before closing the gap. Maintain enough slope for drainage without creating a channel beside the pavers. Downspouts might need extensions or underground drainage. Sprinkler heads should water plants and turf rather than repeatedly soaking the driveway perimeter.

Choose the Right Landscape Edge

Plant beds beside pavers need clear separation and stable containment. Natural edging works in some lawn areas, but rock, shell, and loose aggregate usually need durable edging. Avoid driving stakes or digging blindly where irrigation pipe, lighting cable, drainage, or utilities might be present. The finished edge should look intentional and remain serviceable.

Repair Early

Small perimeter gaps are cheaper to address before several paver rows shift. Ecoscape Outdoor Services inspects the landscape grade, drainage, edging, and irrigation surrounding South Tampa driveways. When the issue requires specialized paver rebuilding, we help identify the correct scope. Closing the cause and restoring support protects the driveway and improves the adjoining landscape.
