Brown-Headed Nuthatch

Sitta pusilla

Bird

A tiny pine-forest bird with a brown cap, white cheek, gray back, and squeaky call that moves headfirst down tree trunks.

Brown-Headed Nuthatches depend on mature pine woodland with standing dead wood for nesting cavities. They occur across much of northern and central Florida.

Home landscapes near pine habitat support them when owners retain safe snags, protect mature pines, and limit broad insecticide use.
