Speckled Swimming Crab

Arenaeus cribrarius

Crustacean

The Speckled Swimming Crab is a sand-colored coastal crab covered with small pale spots and equipped with paddle-like rear legs.

Speckled Swimming Crabs inhabit sandy beaches, surf zones, bays, and nearshore bottoms around Florida. Their spotted shell provides camouflage against sand and shell fragments.

They often bury until only the eyes and antennae remain visible, then emerge to hunt or scavenge. Strong rear paddles allow rapid swimming.
