Tampa Launches Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Campaign Through May 2027

The Tampa Police Department launched a pedestrian and bicyclist safety campaign on October 14, 2026, in partnership with the Institute for Police Technology and Management and the University of North Florida. Running through May 2027, the initiative will add targeted police presence and educational outreach on Tampa roadways with histories of serious crashes. Officers will focus on traffic-law awareness and the shared responsibilities of pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, combining education with enforcement rather than limiting the campaign to a single event or one-day operation. The City says the work is intended to prevent serious injuries and deaths by concentrating resources where road users face elevated risk. The campaign is funded through a contract with the Florida Department of Transportation and IPTM and is part of FDOT’s Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow initiative.
Tampa identified several high-traffic corridors for focused activity: East Busch Boulevard, West Hillsborough Avenue, North Nebraska Avenue, East Fowler Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, West Kennedy Boulevard, North Florida Avenue, North and South Dale Mabry Highway, and the downtown area. People traveling through those locations may see more officers conducting traffic-safety education and targeted enforcement through spring 2027. The announcement does not assign individual dates or hours to each road, so residents should treat the program as an ongoing citywide effort rather than a temporary closure or scheduled checkpoint. The practical message is straightforward: drivers should yield and watch carefully at crossings, bicyclists should follow traffic controls and remain visible, and pedestrians should use marked crossings when available. With busy Tampa corridors carrying cars, bikes, and foot traffic together, the campaign is designed to reinforce predictable behavior and safer street use for everyone.
