Tampa Water-Wise Lawn Program Reports 12 Completed Conversions

The City of Tampa reported encouraging early results from its first Florida-Friendly Landscaping Incentive Program on October 13, 2026. Money collected through water-restriction fines is being reinvested in projects that replace part of a conventional turf lawn with a more water-efficient landscape. Tampa resident Chris Kern is receiving a $1,654.51 rebate after completing a qualifying conversion. The City describes the incentive as a dollar-for-dollar matching rebate that can help offset eligible labor and plant costs. The announcement also says 25 Tampa participants are currently converting portions of their lawns and 12 have completed their projects. The program is designed around a practical local problem: irrigation can represent 50 percent of household water use for many Florida homeowners. By reducing the area devoted to traditional turfgrass and selecting appropriate plants, participants can create attractive landscapes that need less supplemental irrigation. The figures are program results published by the City, not a promise that every applicant will receive the same payment or achieve the same water-bill savings.
Participation requires more than simply removing grass. Eligible customers must complete three educational workshops, receive approval for their landscape design, and pass a final evaluation after installation. Those steps connect the rebate to Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles and help ensure that the finished property supports water conservation without sacrificing curb appeal. Tampa launched the program with Hillsborough County Water Resources and UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, bringing utility guidance and research-based landscape practices into the same process. For homeowners considering a lawn conversion, the update shows why planning matters: the remaining turf, planting beds, irrigation zones, soil conditions, mature plant sizes, and long-term maintenance should work together. The City says plans are underway to continue the program and assist additional residents, but availability and eligibility should be confirmed through current Tampa Water Department program information before any project begins. The October 13 update is significant because it moves the program beyond its original launch and documents real participation, completed conversions, and a specific rebate example while Tampa continues to operate under water-use restrictions.
