UF/IFAS Explains Smarter Compost Use for Tampa Landscapes

UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County’s compost guide explains how to improve landscape soil without overapplying organic material. Its recommendations include applying 1–2 inches in most landscape situations and incorporating compost before planting. For lawns, it describes a much lighter topdressing of ¼–½ inch.
The guide recommends covering bed compost with mulch and using soil testing to guide application rates. Excess compost increases the risk of nutrient imbalances, including phosphorus buildup. Compost supplies organic matter and some nutrients, but it does not replace a suitable fertilizer plan. For Tampa property owners preparing beds or planning sod work, review existing soil conditions before choosing an amendment rate. Read the complete UF/IFAS guide for application details.
