American Beautyberry

Overview

American beautyberry is a deciduous Florida native shrub with arching stems, soft green leaves, small summer flowers, and bright purple berry clusters in late summer and fall. Mature plants commonly reach 4 to 8 feet tall and wide.

Where to Use It

Use beautyberry in woodland edges, wildlife gardens, informal borders, rain-garden edges, or beneath open tree canopies. It looks best in natural groupings where its loose form has room to spread. The berries provide seasonal color and food for birds.

Light, Soil, and Water

Beautyberry grows in full sun or partial shade. Moderate shade often produces attractive foliage and an open woodland character. It accepts sandy soil and seasonal moisture but prefers reasonable drainage. Water consistently during establishment. Mature shrubs tolerate moderate drought.

Planting and Care

Fall and winter are excellent planting seasons in Tampa. Prune hard in late winter if a smaller, fuller shrub is desired because flowers and berries develop on new growth. Avoid summer pruning, which removes berry-producing stems.

Important Considerations
