Autumn Angel Encore Azalea
Rhododendron 'Robleg' Autumn Angel®
Autumn Angel Encore Azalea with compact evergreen foliage and pure white semi-double flowers

Overview
Autumn Angel Encore Azalea is a compact evergreen azalea known for crisp white semi-double flowers and repeat bloom after its main spring display. Its smaller habit fits South Tampa foundation beds, entry gardens, and layered borders where a full-size azalea would crowd the space.
Mature Size and Habit
Expect a rounded shrub about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Growth remains dense when light reaches the plant from several sides.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a low flowering hedge, foundation accent, mass planting, or bright contrast beneath palms and small trees. Keep it separate from turf fertilizer and alkaline masonry runoff.
Sunlight
Morning sun with afternoon protection gives reliable color and healthy foliage. More sun supports repeat bloom when irrigation and root-zone moisture remain consistent.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Azaleas need acidic, organic, well-drained soil. Set the root ball slightly above grade, mulch broadly, and keep the trunk flare uncovered. Water deeply through establishment, then avoid both drought and constantly saturated soil.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
October through February is preferred. The cool season reduces stress and gives fine feeder roots time to develop before summer.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after the spring flush, before the next flower buds form. Remove dead stems and shape selectively rather than shearing. Monitor for lace bugs, mites, scale, leaf spots, and Phytophthora root rot.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Dense evergreen foliage also provides limited shelter.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Established plants tolerate ordinary Tampa winters. Hot reflected sun, dry roots, and poor drainage cause more damage than typical cold. Protect new plants during severe freezes.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
All parts are toxic if eaten and present a pet concern. Roots are shallow and fine, so avoid digging, heavy equipment, and deep mulch over the root zone.
Invasive Concerns
This cultivated azalea is not native to Florida and is not generally treated as invasive. Remove unwanted volunteer seedlings if they appear.
