Overview

Bottle palm is a small tropical palm recognized by its dramatically swollen gray trunk and compact crown of arching feather fronds.

Mature Size and Habit

It is slow growing and commonly matures around 10 to 15 feet tall with a crown about 6 to 8 feet wide.

Use it as a specimen, poolside accent, entry feature, or long-term container palm in a warm protected setting.

Sunlight

Grow in full sun or bright partial sun. Strong light supports the characteristic compact crown.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Excellent drainage is essential. Water regularly while establishing, then allow the upper soil to dry slightly between irrigations.

Plant during warm weather, ideally from late spring through summer, so roots establish before cool nights.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove only fully brown fronds and avoid cutting green tissue or damaging the crownshaft. Correct palm nutrition is important.

The crown can provide limited shelter for small wildlife.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

This is a cold-tender palm. Temperatures near freezing can cause serious damage, so it needs a protected South Tampa microclimate.

No major toxicity or aggressive-root concern is known. Keep the palm clear of traffic areas while the trunk develops.

Invasive Concerns

Bottle palm is native to Mauritius, not Florida, and is not considered invasive in managed landscapes.
