Bushy Bluestem

Andropogon glomeratus

Florida-native Bushy Bluestem with silvery seed plumes in a sunny rain garden

Overview

Bushy Bluestem is a Florida-native warm-season bunchgrass valued for upright blue-green foliage and fluffy silver-white seed plumes. The late-season display catches light and brings movement to naturalistic landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Flowering stems commonly reach 4 to 6 feet tall, while the leafy clump remains narrower at the base.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in rain gardens, wet swales, pond edges, native borders, or erosion-control plantings. Place it behind shorter plants so mature stems do not lean across walks or obscure small accents.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the strongest stems and heaviest plume display.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Bushy Bluestem prefers moist to seasonally wet soil but adapts to ordinary landscape soil after establishment. Water new plants consistently. Avoid deep permanent water and extremely dry elevated beds.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from fall through early spring for easy establishment, or install during the rainy season where drainage is reliable.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cut old stems to 6 to 12 inches in late winter before new growth begins. Divide crowded clumps as needed and remove seedlings from formal beds before deep roots develop.

Wildlife Value

Seeds feed small birds, and upright stems provide cover and nesting material for wildlife.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

This species handles Tampa heat, humidity, and ordinary winter cold. Established plants tolerate brief dry periods, but extended drought shortens foliage and reduces the fall plume display.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major toxicity, thorn, or aggressive woody-root concern is known.

Invasive Concerns

Bushy Bluestem is native to Florida and is not invasive in its native habitat. It can self-seed in moist disturbed soil, so remove volunteers where a tightly controlled design is required.
