Croton

Overview

Croton is a tropical evergreen shrub grown for bold leaves in green, yellow, orange, red, and burgundy. Depending on the cultivar, it reaches about 3 to 8 feet tall and provides year-round color in warm protected sites.

Where to Use It

Use crotons as accent plants, colorful foundation masses, poolside foliage, or container specimens. They look strongest when grouped by cultivar instead of mixing many unrelated leaf colors and shapes in one small bed.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in bright sun or light shade. Strong light develops the best color, while harsh exposure and drought scorch foliage. Use well-drained soil and maintain even moisture during establishment. Avoid waterlogged beds.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant in spring after freeze risk declines. Prune lightly during warm weather to control size and encourage branching. Protect plants before cold events and wait until spring growth begins before removing suspected freeze damage.

Important Considerations
