Dwarf Ixora

Ixora coccinea

Dwarf ixora shrub with glossy leaves and orange-red flower clusters

Overview

Dwarf ixora is a compact tropical evergreen shrub with glossy foliage and rounded clusters of red, orange, pink, or yellow flowers. It provides long-season color in warm Tampa locations.

Mature Size and Growth

Dwarf cultivars generally stay 2 to 4 feet tall and wide. Growth is dense and responds to light shaping, though frequent shearing removes flower buds.

Where to Use It

Use as a low flowering hedge, entry border, foundation layer, container plant, or mass beneath palms. Choose one flower color for a clean repeated design.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in full sun to light shade and acidic, well-drained soil. Maintain even moisture during establishment. High soil pH causes iron and manganese deficiency, seen as yellow leaves with green veins.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant in spring after cold danger decreases. Prune lightly after flowering flushes. Use acid-forming products only when soil testing or visible symptoms support the need.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators. Dense foliage gives low beds year-round structure.

Important Considerations

Ixora is not native to Florida and suffers cold damage near freezing. Alkaline soil, limestone fill, and concrete runoff trigger chronic chlorosis. See ixora care at UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
